The Fillmore Auditorium began life as a roller skating rink. Later it became known as Mammoth Gardens, at which I saw a few concerts: a memorable one being the first full-fledged tour of the Beastie Boys with opening acts Murphy's Law and Fishbone, and where I spied Iggy Pop standing in the aisle wearing black plastic-framed glasses, his hair surreptitiously tucked into the back of a leather jacket.

In my book, the main character has a 21st century hallucinogenic episode within the venue--which is currently named after Bill Graham's '60s hippie-holy Fillmore in San Francisco.

From A Western Capitol Hill:

Inside the Fillmore, there’s a low roar as thousands mill about. The auditorium has a cavernous feel to it like a zeppelin hangar. It used to be a roller skating rink at the beginning of the 20th century. It certainly wasn’t designed to showcase the nuances of sound. Consequently, a mess of muddy bass – and not enough treble – reverberates at skull-crushing volume...

Garrett finds himself paying keen attention to detail. He notices the beams above the stage from which the riggers have hung lights. The purple chandeliers. The disco ball casting off red light like a dog shaking off water from a stream. How the music causes the cup of cola in his hand to vibrate.

He’d take his place at the urinal – and get a kick, as usual, out of pissing literally and metaphorically on the urinal mat that says “Say No to Drugs” – but someone’s already using it. So, instead, he enters the toilet stall, actually lifting the lid, before beginning his business, out of politeness for whatever sad sack might actually need to take dump there at some future point. He grins at the legend “Free Cowboy Hats” that someone’s handwritten on the toilet seat cover dispenser as he relieves himself.

Every year, the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo takes place in Denver. Ranch families with smelly animals converge upon it. It’s a chance for farmers and stockmen from all over the country, some from distances over 1,500 miles away, to show off their breeds; maybe even sell a little bull semen for breeding purposes, on the side. It’s a long-time tradition, and a plaque in the State Capitol attests to the economic force of Colorado ranchers. Horny cowboys and transient whores arrive in Denver, simultaneously.

Sheila had been to the stock show, once, when she was real little and had lived in a farming town.

She remembers how, while she was watching the horses, an old man with a big white cowboy hat had bent down beside her. He pointed and said, “Look at those fine animals, little miss. Back in the old days, we used horses for work: my own daddy would drive his cattle down to the stockyards here.” His eyes glowed and he smiled, yet a sigh escaped his lips. “Now the horses are just for show.”

Denver’s City and County Building sits opposite the Colorado State Capitol, across a couple of major four-lane streets and swaths of urban park. It’s a solemn site, the location of Denver’s courts and the Mayor’s office.

On its grey exterior, though, thousands of red, green, and blue Christmas lights still illuminate the pasty edifice at night. It’s Tradition: the Hands of Time haven’t stopped the overboard display–complete with nativity scene–from returning each year. Nor have the legal challenges put forth by the grumblers and atheists affiliated with the Separation of Church and State Foundation.

But being January, the multicolored bulbs covering the building will soon be taken down. So will the manger and the large figurines of the Three Wise Men, Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus.

And this green chile isn’t made with just any old variety: no, it’s Hatch green chile. That is, long, green chile pods harvested in Hatch, New Mexico, trucked north in late Summer, and then roasted within steel tubular drums affixed to propane burners, and sold from parking lots in strip malls along Federal Boulevard, the burnt smell emanating, charred, vegetal, from the tents with the red ristras hanging from them.

Oh man, it’s got to be made with Hatch green chile. Hatch, they say, grows the best. There’s something about the soil, the earth, involved. Hatch is holy ground to its devotees like other New Mexican landmarks are to their people or pilgrims: the Indian pueblo at Taos or the church with its sacred dirt in Chimayo.

Garrett’s mind takes leave of his body, hovering over Cheesman Park. The park’s green, grassy plots crumble open, extruding the dead from underneath the ground. They begin to dance. Some skeletons hold picnics. Some sunbathe in the nude. Some ride in carriages being pulled by the skeletons of horses. Some shoot the skeletons of birds from the sky. Some tend dead roses. It looks like a collection of Día de los Muertos engravings by Posada come to life.

By all accounts (and here's one), this past Saturday's Columbus Day Parade here in Denver turned out to be relatively subdued. While there were some protesters, there weren't any mass arrests this year.

He took his place among the protesters at the annual Columbus Day Parade. Why oh why, wouldn’t the organizers of the parade just change the name of the thing to “Italian Pride Day”? That would be acceptable, even to most Indians. Why rub it in: the genocide that Columbus instigated with his misaligned voyage?

Women with braided grey hair held toy dolls with fake blood on them aloft. Students shouted angry slogans. Some of the Indian men communally gripped a large drum covered with deerskin and beat rhythmically on it. Silvio spied that famous Indian actor and activist – he couldn’t remember his name – walking by, as he protested the nation’s oldest Columbus Day Celebration, followed by a contingent of the press looking for quotes as meaty as meatballs and snapping photos.

Zack and Roach steal small bottles of lemon extract from a supermarket. They swallow the bottles of liquid – containing 87% alcohol – whole and in succession, their lips puckering, as they envision life without lawmen beneath mountain runoffs of gin. They sit beside a stone church with a sign staked onto the lawn that says, “No loitering.” Luckily, that nice bike cop who checks on the welfare of the homeless – for instance, whether they need referrals to shelters during the winter, whether they’ve stopped breathing – hasn’t been by, yet, to bust them for public intoxication.

“Well, there sure was a lot of racism back in those days,” Garrett comments, as Smiley Joe’s tapping foot and the bends and twangs of his guitar continue to stream out of the speakers.

“Were ‘those days’ these last few years, pray tell? I seem to recall that the Aryan Youth Brigade held an anti-Martin Luther King Day rally at the Capitol not long ago.”

“Ah, that’s small fry. A handful of losers, surrounded by a phalanx of police, complaining about ‘mud people’ and the ‘Zionist Occupational Government,’ while 30 times as many protesters hurl bottles and scream. But that song would have been written just after the 1920s. There was big league and much more upfront racism back then. The Klan held huge rallies near Denver.”

Garrett uses his fingers to count as he continues, “They didn’t like Greeks, didn’t like blacks, and didn’t like Catholics or Jews. They wouldn’t have liked the Chinese, either, but the Chinese were burned out of ‘Chink Alley’ in lower downtown in the late 19th century; let’s just say, it took a while before dim sum returned to Denver. Hell, Mayor Stapleton was a Klansman in the 20s.”

“That didn’t prevent our old airport from being named after him.”

Here, you might spy a Denver Bronco tattoo on the side of a shaved head. A man painted blue and orange, wearing nothing else, roaring up Capitol Hill on his motorcycle. Talk about disgusting: blue and orange cupcakes at the supermarket.

Now, you may be an ordinary tax-paying Coloradan who’s just scraping by. Or, you might just happen to be a multi-national corporation with billions in assets. Either way, when issues come up that could impact you – and, in particular, your livelihood – you’re sure as hell going to want your opinion heard by your elected officials in this most representative of representative governments. If you can afford it, you hire a lobbyist to plead your case before the state legislature.

Who doesn’t need a lobbyist these days? School districts hire them. So do towns, cities, and counties. The agricultural industry. Pharmaceutical companies. Oil and natural-gas businesses. Breweries. Insurance companies. Associations of retired, colored, or diseased people—and their doctors. Even lawyers who provide lobbying services need to hire lobbyists.

From my fictional novel A Western Capitol Hill:

Chinese New Year. Firecrackers explode by the hundreds at a few Asian restaurants along Federal Boulevard in Denver. A Vietnamese Catholic woman who oversees Phee Fi Pho, a Vietnamese noodle-soup restaurant catering to Western customers, stands outside of her establishment, looking down upon the goings-on as primitive, misguided.

But the Denver Dragon finds it fascinating. The explosions tear at the inner fabric of ears and fill patrons’ lungs with sulfur smoke. Charred paper parachutes from the air. A team of men and women, who have donned a dragon costume – a couple of them encased in the head, the rest holding up sections of the tail – dance. Then, the head of the dragon takes a “bite” out of a cabbage that hangs from beneath the restaurant’s entryway.

Senators continue arriving at their places...By now, most have stationed themselves at their conjoined desks. They’ve returned to their familiar coffee mugs, candy jars, family photos, and signs saying “Go Broncos!” Back to their mini-flags of the U.S. and of Colorado—the state’s emblem: a yellow orb like a gold, shotgun pellet embedded within a bloody “c” on top of a horizontal band of white, with horizontal bands of deep blue above and below. Some legislators inspect the complimentary schwag of the day that they’ve received: a gift box of oyster crackers or a jar of salsa or a cookie encased in vacuum-sealed plastic given to them by a Colorado business.
